If you are wondering how to plan a wedding in Guatemala, you are not alone. Every year more couples choose this country for its colonial towns, volcano views and warm hospitality. After years of filming weddings here, we have seen what makes a celebration run smoothly, and most of it comes down to two things: good timing and the right team of vendors.
Choose the right season
Guatemala has two main seasons. The dry season usually runs from November to April and brings clear skies and cool evenings. The rainy season, roughly May to October, often means sunny mornings and afternoon showers. Many couples love the green landscapes of the rainy months; just plan a covered backup space and schedule outdoor portraits earlier in the day.
Keep local holidays in mind as well. Holy Week (Semana Santa) is one of the busiest times of the year in Antigua Guatemala, with processions, closed streets and full hotels. It is beautiful to experience, but it is not the easiest week to host a wedding.
Understand the legal basics
In Guatemala, a civil marriage is performed by a lawyer and notary (abogado y notario). Foreign couples are usually asked for valid passports and birth certificates, and documents issued abroad often need an apostille and an official translation into Spanish. Requirements can change, so contact a local notary several months ahead and confirm the exact list for your nationalities.
Some couples prefer to sign the legal paperwork at home and plan a symbolic ceremony in Guatemala. That option gives you total freedom with timing, location and officiant.
How to find the right vendors
The vendor team shapes your whole experience. Here is the approach we recommend:
- Start with your venue and planner. In Antigua and the surrounding areas, many venues work with trusted vendor lists. A local wedding planner knows who delivers on time and who fits your style.
- Look at full weddings, not only highlights. Ask photographers, filmmakers, florists and caterers for complete galleries or full event examples. Consistency matters more than one perfect image.
- Read reviews and ask for references. A short call with a couple who married recently tells you a lot about communication and reliability.
- Meet by video call. You will spend your wedding day with these people. Make sure you feel comfortable with them.
- Get everything in writing. Confirm schedules, deliverables, deposits, travel costs and what happens if it rains.
Book in the right order
Popular dates fill up fast, especially in the dry season. As a general guide, secure your venue and planner first, then your photographer and filmmaker, then catering, music, florals and the rest. Our wedding planning timeline breaks this down month by month.
Add local touches
Guatemala gives you beautiful details to include: live marimba music, Guatemalan coffee and chocolate stations, textiles woven by local artisans, or a welcome dinner featuring traditional dishes. These touches make the day feel rooted in the place you chose.
Plan for your guests
Most international guests arrive at La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City. The drive to Antigua usually takes around an hour, depending on traffic, so arranging shuttles is a thoughtful gesture. Share a simple guide with hotel options, the dress code and a reminder that evenings can be cool.
