The Art of the First Look: Is It Right for Your Wedding Day?

A first look is a private moment when the couple sees each other before the ceremony. It has become one of the most discussed choices in modern weddings. Is a first look wedding right for you? Here is what we have learned after filming many of them.

Why couples choose a first look

  • A private moment. No audience, no pressure. Just the two of you, often with tears and laughter.
  • More relaxed timeline. Many portraits can be done before the ceremony, so you can join cocktail hour with your guests.
  • Calmer nerves. Seeing each other first often removes the tension of the day.
  • Better light. You can plan the first look and portraits for the most flattering time of day.

Why some couples prefer the aisle

  • The traditional reveal. That first glance at the end of the aisle is iconic for a reason.
  • Shared emotion. Your families get to see your reaction at the same time.
  • A clear meaning. For some couples, waiting is part of their tradition or beliefs.

Alternatives to consider

  • First touch: stand back to back around a corner, hold hands and read letters without seeing each other.
  • First look with a parent: a private moment with your father, mother or grandparents before the ceremony can be incredibly emotional.
  • Letters or gifts: exchange notes before the ceremony, filmed separately.

Tips for a beautiful first look

  1. Choose a quiet spot. A garden, a courtyard or a fountain works well, away from guests.
  2. Give it time. Plan at least 20 to 30 minutes, including a few portraits afterward.
  3. Forget the camera. Turn around, take a breath and simply be with each other. We will stay at a distance.
  4. Think about sound. If you plan to speak or read letters, tell your filmmaker so they can capture the audio.

There is no wrong answer

The right choice is the one that feels true to you. Whatever you decide, the emotion will be real, and that is what we love to capture.
